The multi-layered site Gradac in Sarvaš is one of those archaeological sites that represent an indispensable place in the study of the prehistory of the eastern part of Croatia. It belongs to a tell type settlement, and was continuously inhabited during almost all prehistoric periods, from the Late Stone Age (Neolithic) to the present day. During 1942 and 1943, German archaeologist R. R. Schmidt conducted excavations at Sarvaš, and the research left behind a rich collection of archaeological material, today stored in the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb and the Archaeological Museum Osijek.
The paper will present the location, the history of research on the site, and an overview of the prehistoric cultures that were recorded at the site, with special reference to the Late Copper Age.
